About the Artist

"His command of computer imaging has led him to research for infinite possibilities to recreate shape and forms that find their expression on canvas. Spectacular large formats." - Hans Payan Art Gallery - Houston, TX

In 1993 I graduated Suma Cum Laude with a B.F.A. from the State University of New York. But college did not stem my passion for art. I became fascinated with art, particularly drawing and painting, at a very young age. By the age of thirteen I was so passionate about painting that my parents bought me an easel and oil set. They recognized the artistic germ in me. Painting became my outlet at an early age and managed to get me through good and tough times including the untimely death of my older brother and my parent’s divorce. Painting became my therapy and continues to be this way to this day. When I pick up a brush and start painting it just feels right. I love the texture of paint, the way it smells and the way my eyes are stimulated as I blend the colors. I am most content when paint; I feel happy, creative and alive.
Stettner shares his technique for approaching a painting project. "When I approach a canvas painting I find the large white canvas intimidating. My first step is to use acrylic as a wash to establish the outline for my painting idea. I continue painting with the acrylic, building up the surface, and bringing out images. Developing these images is a magical process. At a certain point I put away the acrylic paints and continue with the oil paints to finish the canvas painting. The oil paints have the sinuous, undulating and brilliant colors that are intricate to my modern paintings." My work continues to be innovative and challenging. I am inspired by Kandinsky, Chuck Close, Francis Bacon, Ed Paschke and Picasso. My philosophy is an artist should be like a scientist, always challenging and asking new questions. In my opinion the purpose of art is not solely entertainment; its purpose is also to be historical and educational.
His style is beyond Cubism, Neo-Expressionism and Abstract; a real challenge to the idea of modern art. Good contemporary art reflects contemporary trends in society, and truly outstanding works might even suggest the future. These paintings are entirely felt - - Stettner’s style is a very powerful, personal, intimate medium of painting in which the character, identity and touch of the artist can be felt. These works of art will have true lasting value and historical importance; they are paintings you can contemplate, live with and enjoy.
